Ontario’s next government must introduce a universal, public child care system.
Public child care is better: Limit for-profit child care by expanding only in the public and non-profit sectors to ensure quality, stability and accountability. Public funds should go towards programs, not profits.
Improve up-front affordability: Provide operational funding for programs and ensure that no one is turned away because of cost.
Early childhood educators deserve decent pay: Set a provincial wage scale of a minimum starting rate of $25 and hour for registered Early Childhood Educators. Operational funding for programs should be based on these fair wages.
Families need new spaces: Immediately address the shortage of safe, licensed child care spaces. Ensure that these new spaces are located in the communities that need them and are flexible to accommodate shift, on-call and temporary work, and evening or weekend work.
